In a heartwarming rescue effort, a planeload of 103 shelter pets landed in Portland on Saturday, February 1, 2025, after being transported from the Los Angeles area. This operation was made possible through a collaborative effort involving Southwest Airlines, the Oregon Humane Society (OHS), and Greater Good Charities.

Background of the Journey

The need for this transport arose due to the devastating wildfires near Los Angeles, which have wreaked havoc on the local community and displaced countless families and their beloved pets. With California’s animal shelters already overcrowded, the OHS took the opportunity to help those animals in need by providing them with a safe place while clearing space for pets impacted by the fires.

A Smooth Landing

Captain James Owsley, who piloted the flight into Portland International Airport (PDX), expressed his delight in being part of this meaningful mission. “Everyone was terrific and very well-behaved,” he noted about the furry passengers. Owsley’s flight marked his first charity operation, and he emphasized the crew’s enthusiasm for contributing to such a noble cause.

Adoption Opportunities

Following their arrival, the majority of the 65 cats and 38 dogs will soon be available for adoption at the Oregon Humane Society. Laura Klink, a representative from OHS, hopes this rescue effort will encourage more people to consider adopting pets. “Adopting a pet from anywhere helps pets everywhere,” Klink stated, highlighting the ripple effect of compassion toward animals in need.

This initiative reflects the larger commitment of animal shelters and organizations to work collaboratively in times of crisis, demonstrating that with community support, hope can be restored for countless shelter pets.
