In a heartwarming story from San Diego, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois named Eagle is finding her spirit again, thanks to the dedicated efforts of County Animal Services. Eagle was discovered with a painful, necrotic wound on her hind leg by an Animal Services officer during an unrelated investigation. Unfortunately, her owner refused to seek veterinary care or surrender her, leading to a court-ordered seizure to ensure Eagle received the urgent medical attention she needed.
Tragically, despite the swift response of the medical team, Eagle’s leg could not be saved, and she required an expensive surgery to give her a chance at recovery. Fortunately, County Animal Services tapped into its Spirit Fund, a vital resource established to help animals in dire circumstances. According to Animal Services Lieutenant N. Harrington, “She’s almost all healed and she’s doing great,” expressing hope for Eagle’s future adoption.
Since her surgery, Eagle’s demeanor has transformed remarkably, indicating her recovery isn’t just physical. She has become more open and friendly towards people, a testament to her resilient spirit. Without the funding from the Spirit Medical Fund, many animals like Eagle might face euthanasia as a means to alleviate their suffering.
The Spirit Fund was initiated in July 2008 after a puppy named Spirit was rescued from severe abuse yet displayed a remarkable will to survive. Public donations meant to help Spirit allowed County Animal Services to extend their assistance to other animals in need, like a puppy found in a dumpster and another with a broken limb.

You too can make a difference in the lives of animals like Eagle. Consider adopting or donating to the Spirit Fund. Every contribution is tax-deductible, whether made online or through a check sent to County Animal Services, designated specifically for the Spirit Fund. Your generosity can help continue the legacy of compassion for animals in need.
